About the Author

Assia Djebar, born Fatima-Zohra Imalayen in 1936 in Algeria, was a pioneering feminist writer, filmmaker, and intellectual whose work profoundly illuminated the struggles of women in postcolonial North Africa. Educated in French schools and later at the Sorbonne, she became one of the first Algerian women to earn a degree in history, experiences that infused her literature with a sharp critique of colonialism, patriarchy, and cultural silencing. Djebar's oeuvre, spanning novels, essays, and films, often explores the intersections of language, memory, and resistance, drawing from her own life amid the Algerian War of Independence and its aftermath. A member of the Académie française, she passed away in 2015, leaving a legacy that continues to inspire global discussions on gender, identity, and decolonization through her eloquent and unflinching narratives.
