Arif Dirlik was a pioneering historian and intellectual whose work profoundly shaped understandings of global history, postcolonial theory, and Asian American studies. Born in Turkey in 1940, he spent much of his career in the United States, teaching at institutions like the University of Oregon and Duke University, where he explored the intersections of capitalism, nationalism, and cultural identity. Dirlik's scholarship challenged Eurocentric narratives, emphasizing the role of the Global South in shaping modernity. His seminal book, Chinese on the American Frontier (Pacific Formations: Global Relations in Asian and Pacific Perspectives), illuminates the overlooked contributions and struggles of Chinese immigrants in the American West, revealing the transnational dynamics of race, labor, and empire. Throughout his prolific output, Dirlik advocated for a critical, decolonial approach to historiography, influencing generations of scholars until his passing in 2017.
