Archimandrite Sophrony (1896-1993), born Sergei Sacharov in Russia, was a profound Orthodox Christian theologian, ascetic, and spiritual writer whose life bridged the turbulent upheavals of the 20th century. Initially an artist in Moscow, he discovered his monastic calling in the 1920s, leading him to Mount Athos in Greece, where he became a disciple of the revered Staretz Silouan the Athonite. After Silouan's repose, Sophrony continued his spiritual formation in France and England, founding the Monastery of St. John the Baptist in Essex in 1959, which became a beacon for Orthodox monasticism in the West. His writings, deeply rooted in patristic tradition and personal experience of divine light, explore themes of repentance, humility, and the prayer of the heart, offering timeless guidance for seekers of inner peace and union with God. Through works like The Monk of Mount Athos: Staretz Silouan 1866-1938, he illuminated the life and teachings of his elder, influencing generations of Christians worldwide.
