About the Author
Apuleius, a Roman writer and philosopher of the 2nd century AD, was born in Madauros, North Africa, to a prominent family, and educated in Carthage, Athens, and Rome, where he mastered rhetoric, philosophy, and the occult arts. Renowned for his eclectic blend of Greek and Roman traditions, he faced trial in Sabratha for alleged sorcery, defending himself eloquently in his Apologia. His surviving masterpiece, The Golden Ass, is the only complete Latin novel from antiquity, narrating the misadventures of Lucius, transformed into a donkey, through a tapestry of tales involving magic, romance, and satire. Apuleius's works reflect his deep engagement with Platonism, mystery religions, and the vibrant cultural mosaic of the Roman Empire, influencing later European literature profoundly.
