Apollonios Rhodios
About the Author
Apollonios Rhodios, a distinguished poet of the Hellenistic era, served as the chief librarian at the renowned Library of Alexandria during the 3rd century BCE, under the patronage of Ptolemy II. Born around 295 BCE, possibly on the island of Rhodes—whence his name—he immersed himself in the rich traditions of Greek literature, drawing inspiration from Homeric epics and earlier mythological narratives. His magnum opus, The Argonautika, an epic poem chronicling the heroic voyage of Jason and the Argonauts in quest of the Golden Fleece, exemplifies his masterful blend of adventure, romance, and scholarly depth. Through vivid seafaring imagery and psychological insight into divine and mortal interactions, Apollonios elevated the genre, influencing generations of writers and cementing his legacy as a pivotal figure in ancient Greek poetry.
