Aphra Behn (1640–1689) was a pioneering English writer, poet, translator, and one of the first women to earn her living through literature in Restoration England. Born in Kent and possibly traveling to Surinam as a young woman, Behn's experiences abroad informed her vivid depictions of colonialism and human bondage. She worked as a spy for King Charles II during the Dutch Wars before turning to writing, producing a prolific body of plays, novels, poetry, and prose that challenged social norms and gender roles.
