Anna Politkovskaya was a fearless Russian journalist and human rights activist renowned for her unflinching coverage of the Chechen conflict and the broader issues of corruption and authoritarianism in post-Soviet Russia. Born in New York City to Soviet parents in 1958, she grew up in Moscow and pursued a career in journalism after studying at Moscow State University. As a special correspondent for the independent newspaper Novaya Gazeta, Politkovskaya embedded herself in war zones, interviewing soldiers, civilians, and victims to expose the brutal realities of the Second Chechen War. Her work often placed her in grave danger, leading to numerous threats and an assassination in 2006 that shocked the world and highlighted the perils faced by truth-tellers in Russia. Through her writings, she advocated for peace, justice, and accountability, leaving a profound legacy as a voice for the voiceless.
