Born in London to a family of intellectuals—her father was the classical scholar John Mackail, and her aunt was the artist Burne-Jones—she drew inspiration from her own experiences in Barsetshire, a fictional county echoing Trollope's creations. Thirkell's novels, infused with gentle satire and keen social observation, chronicle the everyday dramas of families, romances, and village intrigues amid the upheavals of the 20th century.
