Américo Paredes (1915-1999) was a pioneering Mexican American scholar, folklorist, and author whose work profoundly shaped the study of border cultures and Chicano literature. Born in Brownsville, Texas, to immigrant parents, Paredes drew from his experiences along the U.S.-Mexico border to explore themes of identity, resistance, and cultural hybridity. As a professor at the University of Texas at Austin, he became a leading voice in folklore studies, blending academic rigor with storytelling traditions. His seminal book, With His Pistol in His Hand: A Border Ballad and Its Hero (Texas Classics), recovered the legend of Gregorio Cortez, challenging Anglo-American narratives and celebrating Mexican American heroism.
