Albrecht Dürer, the renowned German Renaissance artist and polymath, was born in 1471 in Nuremberg, where he apprenticed under his father, a goldsmith, before studying painting and printmaking with masters like Michael Wolgemut. His innovative woodcuts and engravings revolutionized the art of the printed image, blending meticulous detail with profound symbolic depth, and he became one of the first Northern European artists to gain international fame through his travels to Italy and collaborations with patrons like Holy Roman Emperor Maximilian I. Dürer's theoretical writings on proportion, perspective, and geometry, such as his treatises on human form and fortification, underscore his intellectual rigor and influence on art theory. Though primarily a visual artist, his works often narrate historical and allegorical tales, bridging art and literature in the humanist tradition.
