Albie Sachs
About the Author
Albie Sachs is a renowned South African jurist, human rights advocate, and author whose life and writings embody the struggle against apartheid and the pursuit of justice. Born in Johannesburg in 1935 to a Jewish family of activists, Sachs studied law at the University of Cape Town and became deeply involved in the anti-apartheid movement, enduring exile, imprisonment, and a near-fatal car bomb attack in 1988 that cost him an arm and his sight in one eye. Returning to South Africa after the fall of apartheid, he served as a judge on the Constitutional Court from 1994 to 2009, contributing profoundly to the nation's democratic framework. In his memoir Soft Vengeance of a Freedom Fighter, Sachs recounts his transformative journey with remarkable resilience and forgiveness, blending personal narrative with reflections on reconciliation and humanity's capacity for healing.
