Emerging in the late 1960s amid the American Indian Movement, the group has long served as a vital voice for Native sovereignty, cultural preservation, and resistance against colonial oppression. Through their publication, they blend oral traditions with contemporary journalism to amplify Indigenous perspectives on land rights, environmental justice, and spiritual interconnectedness. Their seminal work, Basic Call to Consciousness, issued in 1978, remains a cornerstone manifesto that unites global Indigenous peoples in a shared call for harmony with the earth, influencing movements from Standing Rock to international forums on native rights.
