A. E. Waite (1857-1942) was a British occultist, mystic, and prolific writer whose works profoundly influenced the study of esotericism and symbolism in the early 20th century. Born in Brooklyn to British parents, he spent much of his life in London, immersing himself in the Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn and later becoming a key figure in the Independent and Rectified Rite of the Golden Dawn. Waite's scholarly approach blended Christian mysticism, Kabbalah, and Freemasonry, making complex arcane knowledge accessible to a wider audience. His most enduring contribution is The Pictorial Key to the Tarot, a seminal guide that demystifies the tarot's symbolism and divinatory uses, alongside his role in designing the iconic Rider-Waite Tarot deck with artist Pamela Colman Smith. Beyond tarot, Waite authored numerous books on Rosicrucianism, alchemy, and sacred texts, leaving a legacy as a bridge between ancient wisdom and modern spiritual inquiry.
